Fighting in Taiz Forces 1,790 Families to Flee

Fighting between Yemen’s government forces and Ansar Allah, commonly known as the Houthis, has intensified in Taiz governorate in southwestern Yemen since September 3. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that 1,790 families were displaced within two days.

Government forces announced that they had retaken Hays district in southern Hodeidah governorate. Reports said that fighting also took place in areas of Taiz and Hodeidah. There was no independent confirmation of all the announced changes in control of locations.

The clashes have killed and injured civilians and fighters, and reports do not agree on the number of casualties. The United Nations said that some families remain close to fighting areas and that weak communications and a lack of emergency aid are making humanitarian work more difficult.

The conflict in Yemen has continued for years. The Houthis control Sanaa and areas in the north, while the government and its allies administer other areas. The new events show that protecting people and delivering aid are still necessary.
