Interior Minister Requests Urgent Plan to Improve Cleanliness in Nouakchott

Mauritania’s minister of interior, decentralization, and local development, Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed El Amin, held an emergency meeting in Nouakchott on Monday, August 3, 2026. The meeting included officials from Arma Mauritania, the company responsible for cleaning services in the capital, as well as local officials.

The minister said that the current level of cleanliness is unacceptable and does not meet residents’ expectations. He asked the company to begin a comprehensive field plan immediately during the coming few weeks. He also asked it to mobilize the workers, equipment, and technical resources needed to improve the service.

The minister gave the company a clear warning. He said that the authorities would not tolerate any shortcoming or delay in meeting contractual commitments. The authorities will follow the measures daily and continuously assess results on the ground. He added that failure to achieve the required improvement could lead to legal and contractual measures.

On July 31, the prime minister met regional governors to follow an urgent programme for expanding access to basic services. The meeting also focused on speeding up local projects and solving difficulties that could delay them. The two meetings show the government’s interest in following services and projects in different cities and regions.
