Microbial Treatments Improve Coral Health in the Red Sea

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia published a new study about coral in the Red Sea.

The researchers used beneficial bacteria from healthy coral. They also used inactive bacteria.

During a marine heatwave in the summer of 2022, the team put these treatments on coral affected by heat.

The experiment lasted fifteen days. After that, one live treatment and one inactive treatment helped improve coral health. They maintained the ability of algae inside it to use light to produce energy. The researchers said that more studies are needed before this method is used widely.
