Kuwaiti Duo Performs Arabhop Music in Washington

On the evening of Friday, August 7, 2026, the Middle East Institute in Washington is holding a concert by the Kuwaiti duo Sons of Yusuf. The brothers Ya’koob and AbdulRahman perform songs that bring together rap and traditional Arabic instruments, such as the oud and percussion.

The duo also blend poetry and storytelling with music, and call this style “Arabhop.” The artists were born in Kuwait and live between Kuwait and Los Angeles. Their songs carry stories about Kuwaiti identity and shared memory in the Gulf region to a wider audience.

The concert is part of a closing celebration for the exhibition “Beyond the Weave: Contemporary Dialogues with Al Sadu.” The exhibition presents work by twelve Kuwaiti artists who took part in artist residencies organised by the Al Sadu Society in Kuwait. The works show how contemporary art can draw inspiration from local heritage.

Al Sadu is a traditional weaving craft connected to Bedouin life in the desert. Women used sheep’s wool and camel hair to make tents, rugs, and furnishings. Its geometric patterns carry meanings of movement, memory, and identity, so the event brings together music, heritage, and modern creativity.
