Kurdish Businessman Releases 28 Mountain Goats in Sulaymaniyah

In the village of Safra, near the Sharbazher district in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in northern Iraq, Kurdish businessman Sherif Safra released 28 mountain goats into nature on Saturday, September 5, 2026. He paid for the initiative himself.

Safra said that he wanted to bring life back to nature in the area and encourage people to protect the environment. According to what he told 964 Media, about 60 percent of the goats were wild mountain goats, while the rest were tame goats.

He gave local residents the task of protecting and caring for the animals. Brigadier Hoshyar, the director of the Forest and Environment Police in Sulaymaniyah, praised the initiative. He said that anyone who harms or hunts the goats may face legal penalties.

This was not Safra’s first step. He had previously released 1,200 partridges in several villages. The story shows how a small personal initiative can draw attention to protecting wildlife.
