Archaeologists Present Gold from a Byzantine Shipwreck in Croatia

On Thursday, archaeologists in Croatia presented the results of years of work. The team studied a Byzantine ship that sank near Mljet Island. The team found the ship in 2014 and began studying the site in 2015. It organized nine underwater research campaigns. The ship dates to the seventh or eighth century CE.

The archaeologists found four gold belt sets, rings, and coins. Precious stones decorated some of the objects, including emeralds, rubies, and pearls. The team thinks that an important person may have traveled on the ship. The discovery helps researchers understand travel and trade at that time.
