Forest Fires in Algeria Ease as Authorities Begin an Investigation

The intensity of forest fires in eastern Algeria eased on Saturday, while Civil Protection teams continued working in several provinces. Authorities said that twelve people died in the wave of fires.

Civil Protection announced that 123 fires were recorded from August 28 to 29, and that 118 fires were extinguished. Five fires remained active in Jijel, Sétif, and Tébessa.

Some families were evacuated from their homes in the Mechta El-Maissa area, near Texenna in Jijel Province. Residents returned home after the danger was removed, while firefighting operations continued.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited injured people at the Burns Hospital in Zeralda, west of the capital. He said criminal involvement in some fires could not be ruled out, but that investigations would determine their causes. Residents from several provinces also sent aid to affected areas.
