Alternative for Germany Wins in Saxony-Anhalt

Preliminary results in the election for the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, showed a victory for Alternative for Germany, known as AfD. Voting took place on Sunday, September 6.

The party received 43.8 percent of the vote, more than double its result in 2021. It won 39 seats out of 83 in the state parliament. The Christian Democratic Union came second with 17.2 percent and 15 seats.

For a party to govern alone, it needs 42 seats. Therefore, Alternative for Germany did not win an absolute majority. Turnout reached 77.8 percent, higher than in the previous election, when it was only 60.3 percent five years earlier.

The state authority for the protection of the constitution classifies the party as confirmed far right, and the party is challenging this classification in court. The Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party rejected cooperation with it. However, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance said it was ready to speak with all parties, so forming a government remains unclear.
