Omani Researchers Test Producing Water from Air for Farming

Researchers at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman carried out a study on producing water for farming from air in the atmosphere. The team studied combining water collection from the air with solar energy and hydroponic farming.

The team examined different areas in Oman to identify places suitable for this technology. Some devices produced up to 100 litres of water per day, depending on the weather and the capacity of the machine.

The researchers then installed water generators, solar panels, and a hydroponic system in a greenhouse. Tests showed that tomato plants grew better inside the greenhouse than plants grown outdoors. Lettuce leaves were also larger.

The team believes the system may help farmers in areas affected by water scarcity and soil salinity. However, the system needs improvement, especially in controlling nutrients and water acidity. The researchers proposed smart sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor the water and plants in real time.
