Lebanese Parliament Abolishes the Death Penalty
On Tuesday, August 11, the Lebanese Parliament approved the abolition of the death penalty in a public session. A majority of members voted for the change. Lebanon thus became the first Arab country to end this punishment in law.
The law will replace the death penalty with life imprisonment with hard labor. The law still needs the president’s signature to take official effect.
Lebanon has not carried out an execution since January 2004. However, courts issued new sentences after that in different cases. Some of these sentences were suspended. The new law changes old death sentences to life imprisonment.
