Rajab Helps Gaza’s Children Keep Skateboarding
Rajab al-Reefi is trying to keep skateboarding part of children’s lives in Gaza. He is a leader in a team that has taught girls and boys the sport for years. The team had a place to practise, but the war destroyed it.
After the team’s last board broke, Rajab asked the children about boards they had left in their homes. Some of those homes had been bombed. Team members searched beneath the rubble, found some equipment, and repaired what they could.
Rajab goes with his son to the courtyard of a nearby center, where the children practise simple moves until sunset. On one practice day, about 40 children gathered and watched two girls practise on the boards.
Rajab also works as a photographer to support his family because most skateboarding activities have stopped. The few boards are not enough for all the children, and they may wear out with frequent use. Even so, Rajab and the team continue practising, hoping to find boards and a safe place to play.
