Djibouti Seeks International Support for People Arriving from Yemen

Djibouti’s foreign minister, Abdoulkader Omar, called for greater international support to help Yemenis arriving in his country. He said the arrival of thousands of displaced people is putting pressure on host communities and essential services. He added that Djibouti cannot meet these needs alone.

According to a report by Al Hadath on September 27, Omar said in an address to the UN General Assembly that needs include shelter, food, and other basic services. He said the number of arrivals could reach 10,000, according to UN estimates.

On September 22, the UN refugee agency reported that more than 3,000 Yemenis had arrived in Djibouti and that arrivals were continuing. The agency is working with the authorities and partners to assist them, but its funding for work in Djibouti is limited. Omar called for de-escalation and a political solution to the conflict in Yemen.
